Canada was discovered, explored and developed by navigation of our waterways. Navigation is a valuable part of our rich Canadian heritage and it always has been the fundamental right of every Canadian to pick up a canoe, carry it to a river, stream or waterway of his or her choice, put it into the water, and paddle on it.

I have serious concerns about proposed changes to Canada's Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA). It is not right that the strongest proponents of the removal of navigation rights appearing before the TRAN committee were Transport Canada staff within the Navigable Waters Protection Program - the very people who are charged with protecting the public right of navigation in Canada.

I feel this is a very serious breach of public trust of the highest order and I support those individuals, organizations and political leaders of Canada who are stepping forward to protect the rich heritage of navigation rights in Canada.
